Project Overview
“Safety and Productivity Solutions Align”
BHP is a major iron ore producer and exporter with operations at Port Hedland. The project was for wharf remediation works, in extreme tidal and restricted working conditions. BHP engaged GS Engineering to carry out wharf remediation works.
Location
Port Hedland, Nelson Point, North Wharf, Pilbara, Western Australia
Challenges Faced
The Issues
The issues faced included financial issues and delays, and major safety issues due to extreme cyclonic weather and tidal conditions and the nature of the works under the wharf.
ENC was engaged to recover the project and provide solutions to increase productivity.
What We Did
The Solution
ENC first reviewed all available project financial data, safety records and past schedule progress and remaining works. ENC made significant changes and initiated a major safety initiative to both improve productivity and provide much safer working conditions by introducing a “Zero Gravity Arm” (see image) resulting in a BHP “Bright spot” notice being issued across BHP operations.
What Impacts Did Our Involvement Have?
The Outcome
After secondment of the ENC team and assignment of Alex Krstic of ENC as the new Project Manager, Alex and the ENC team turned the project around from a significant loss position to an acceptable profit position, with much improved safety outcomes, resulting in zero LTI’s or restricted workday cases.
